Crowning A Monterey Cypress
This is the first of our regular blog series where we take a look at some of the more interesting jobs we have undertaken. Here we describe a crowning job recently carried out on a Monterey Cypress
We completed a major reduction in height and crown of this Monterey cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa) in Waterford. Its estimated age was c.150 years and was entering the later stages of its growth cycle. The reduction was carried out for safety reasons as there was dieback in the crown and also the tree had dropped a number of major limbs in the past couple of years.
The tree itself had a top height of 28 metres with the crown overhanging ESB wires, a busy road, neighbouring property and numerous trees/scrubs in the client’s garden.
To ensure no damage was done, the majority of the crown was lowered to the ground using rigging ropes as space was tight. To remove two large limbs overhanging ESB wires and the road a truck mounted hoist was brought in for the day.
As much of the lower live growth as possible was left in order to prolong the life of the tree while ensuring risk of branch breakage was minimised.
The job was completed over four days with the client very satisfied with the results. Probably one of the more challenging jobs we have carried out!
